More than Wonderful

Two days after Christmas, Sheree and Joe Monroe decided to use a few days of their vacation to go camping. They headed north toward Marianna Caverns. They read the Bible together for awhile, and then Sheree became engrossed in a book. Joe concentrated on driving the truck and the camper it was pulling. All was serene until Joe spotted a large motor home ahead. Carefully he moved into the left lane to pass.

But their camper started swaying, possibly due to windy conditions, and Joe inched a little farther to the left. He went over a huge hole—and suddenly the vehicles began to jackknife all over the road. The camper detached, and the truck rolled over three times. “Jesus, save us!” Sheree called.

Because there was no front or rear impact to the truck, the air bags did not inflate; nor did the seat belts engage until after the first roll. And yet, Sheree felt arms wrapping around her. “I felt extremely calm,” she says, “even though I knew I had sustained some injuries. I felt that God was sending us angels, almost from the start.”

A father and son stopped to help even before the truck stopped rolling and stayed for two hours. The motor home had pulled over to help, and one of the passengers took Sheree’s hand as she lay strapped to a body board and told her she would pray for her. There was the kind paramedic who took them to Tallahassee General hospital. And there were the many friends who would bring food to their house in the following days and share words of prayer and comfort.

As it turned out, Sheree had an 8-inch gash in her head, deep bruising in her ribs and had damaged a disc in her spine. Joe sustained only a cut on his forehead. When the first helpers arrived on the scene, they said they hadn’t expected to find anyone alive, Sheree says. “But then they saw our Bibles, and they understood why we survived.”

Sheree felt very little pain during the ordeal, and is certain that God shielded her. Perhaps the angels did too. Just a few weeks after the accident, she was able to sing one of her favorite songs to the congregation at First Baptist Church, “He’s More than Wonderful.” The audience gave her a standing ovation.
