Kidnapping Foiled

Mary Moore, of Bakersfield, California, will testify that angels can be sent to others.  She posted her experience last year on www.SpiritDaily.com, a site which reports spiritual news from around the world.  In the summer of 1999, Mary and her husband and their four daughters, ages nine years through six months, went to spend a fun-filled day at an amusement park.  The park was quite crowded, and since Mary was pushing a stroller, she decided to keep the two littlest girls with her; the older two could be with her husband, in case the family got separated.

The first part of the day went well; everyone enjoyed lunch and decided what rides they would choose for the afternoon.  Somewhere around 2 pm, as the park became more crowded, Mary lost sight of the other half of the family.  At the same time, Maya, her three-year-old, who was walking next to the stroller, got her balloon tangled up with another woman’s balloon.  Scanning the crowd behind her for her husband, Mary at first did not notice what was happening.  Then, for some reason she turned to look down at Maya—and her heart seemed to stop.  The woman with the balloon had casually taken Maya’s hand and was walking away with her!

“My daughter’s eyes grew very large as she looked back at me,” Mary said.  “And although I started praying immediately, it was as if everything happened in slow motion.”  Her husband was out of sight, probably too far away to hear her call.  She knew she could not maneuver the heavy stroller across all the lines of people without losing sight of Maya.  But how could she leave the baby here, alone and vulnerable to yet another kidnapper?  Perhaps there was more than one, and this was part of their plan…

There was no time to think.  “God, send protection for the baby,” Mary whispered.  She let go of the stroller, and plunged into the crowd.  Maya was almost out of sight by now, but Mary ran as fast as she could, dodging, darting....there was her daughter, still clutching her balloon, and looking bewildered.  Mary raced up to Maya and grabbed her away from the stranger.  “The woman muttered something about ‘taking her to see her father’,” Mary said.  “But I could not confront her, because I had to get back to the stroller.”  Holding Maya’s hand tightly in hers, Mary again moved in and out of the throng.  “Oh, angels, please…the baby, the baby…” she prayed.

And yes, there was her husband and her other two daughters, standing by the stroller in amazement, the baby still strapped into the seat.  Mary almost wept.  Both her little ones were safe!  “I was so shaken that I could not even remember what the woman looked like,” Mary says.  “I just held Maya’s hand so tightly, thanking heaven for showing us such incredible mercy that day.”  The Moores decided unanimously to leave the park, and go home.

The next day, Mary’s mother phoned.  “Is everything all right, dear?” she asked.

“Why yes, Mom, why do you ask?” Mary hadn’t discussed the episode with anyone else, and wasn’t sure she would. The memory was so frightening.

Mary’s mother paused, then plunged ahead.  “Yesterday afternoon about two o’clock, I had such strong thoughts of you,” she said.  “I knew you were at the park, but something felt wrong, so I started praying.  I entrusted you to Mary and to the Holy Angels.  Is everything okay?”

Mary was getting goosebumps. “It is now, Mom,” she said.

“I know my mother’s prayers kept us together,” Mary says today.  “She entrusted us to our Blessed Mother.  Mary asked holy angels to watch over us.  An angel alerted me when the women took my daughter’s hand.  An angel guarded Maya from being abducted.  And an angel watched over our infant while I had to leave her alone.”  Mary also prays for the woman who attempted to take Maya.  “I will never know her full intentions—but I do know that God is good, and we praise Him always.”
